Stripes on a Rocket

Alex made a wizard's hat at school, but when it came home it turned into a rocket. For Stripes.

I love that he staged it then asked me to take the picture- I love how her got the perspective in the photo. He even had me take it a second time to get it just right!

Excel here we come!

How awesome is it that he masters counting to a hundred by ones and tens and then they start columns and rows.  (He's already better prepared for Excel than half the people I have worked with!)

Alex gets a new shovel

From Grandpa Nice:

Alex likes using the shovel his Daddy used when he was five.  That's his new friend, Springs, in the wheelbarrow.

Waiting for me...

Love notes from my little boy!

Alex has started leaving me notes, arrows I have to follow, clues to an "I <3 U".  I don't know where he picked it up, the little hunt, but he now writes "mommy" all on his own! This is the third time he's set one up, neither Stan or I even realize he's doing it! He's so stealthy!

I am re-using the arrows to lead him on a little hunt of his own. I look forward to seeing his reaction in the morning.

It is so much fun being Alex's Mommy.

Building Something

I love watching my boys build things together.  This morning they're making windshield wipers with Legos.

I recently went on a trip for work. The night before I left, the light bulb in Alex's bathroom went out. He was upset about it until we told him that he and Daddy would go to Home Depot the next day; fixing the light would be their project. Alex grinned great big. Then his smile faded and his shoulders slumped... "but you won't be here to watch us".

Sweet boy. He's going to be a good man, just like his Daddy.

Orange Fly (the love of a child)

You forget, as you grow up, the battered, loved, toys of childhood. Here is Orange Fly. He came home in a goodie bag and within 20 minutes of play lost an eye.
It was a tragedy. "But he can't see!"
Then, Grammy suggested he just draw a new eye on fly.  So that's what he did.

Just as loved as before.

Flowers for Mommy

My sweet boy spent time with Grandmother and Granddad last night... Had an awesome time. And came home with flowers for me! They are so pretty!

I told him I was going to take them to work and he said "then it will be like you're visiting with me all day". Smart boy. Makes this Momma so happy.

My Oo Book

Alex came home from school with an Oo book today. I love the ostrich he drew on the cover!

First Day of K

I asked Alex why he was making such a goofy smile, he said "'cause I'm missing my teeth - see".

He was so happy, before and after, and reportedly had a great day (even though he caught a ball with one of his eyes at recess and got to visit the nurse on his 1st day)!
"Playin' on the playground" was still his favorite part of the day.
He also sang his new hello song to me (while I tried to brush his teeth for bed... timing...)
And he informed me that he already knew how to count to 1, even before his first day of Kindergarten. And that his favorite number is 10, because it's very big. I told him he was very smart.
Last night he told us "Well, my new school doesn't have as many toys as Building Blocks". Stan and I explained that's because he will be doing lots more learning at this school - like learning to read. Stan asked him if he knew what he could do when he learns how to read "what?" Alex said, eyes perked "you can read instructions, so you can build things". That seemed to console him.

T-Ball

Alex played t-ball this year! His team was mostly friends from school
(thanks a bunch to the dedicated Dads who coached) and they all had a
lot of fun playing together. Isn't he so adorable!?

T-ball Practice

Happy Boy

I decided to surprise Alex with a smoothie when I picked him up from school.  He told me "you're the best". Who knew a smoothie would make MY day!

Fro-Yo

Alex was awesome at swim lessons today. He jumped in, both feet, fully committed. He popped up with a smile on his face and tread water for a few seconds. He swam to Ms. Tori with his head underwater and kicked, kicked, kicked. He was enjoying his new found skill so much that while waiting for his turn on the steps he had to be told not to put his head under because the teacher wasn't there with him... what a change from last week when he still strained to keep his face dry! I am so proud of him. My awesome little boy has decided he loves the water.

To celebrate we got frozen yogurt! Mmm! Alex even drank the melty part... soo cute. (You pay by the ounce and there's only 1 size cup.) He got cookies and cream, I got boysenberry. Such a treat to enjoy this mild evening with my boy and some fro-yo.

Dinner with my Boys

We took advantage at Houlihan's Wednesday special. Alex was in a particularly good mood. (The corny dog and ice cream didn't hurt.)

Puzzle Chair

Alex and Grandpa were playing with the puzzle chair when Grandpa decided to build Alex into it! They are very silly. When Grandpa held up the last piece and told Alex he needed to put it in his mouth to lock the chair together... Alex told him "no, we don't put chairs in our mouth". He is already making life rules!

Rule #1 - no chairs in mouths.

How was your day?

Yesterday, as we pulled into the driveway, Alex asked me "So, Mommy, what did you do at work today?"

It was SO stinkin' adorable.  It's the question we ask him all the time, only about school.  So I told him that I had a very important conference call (a phone call with more than 2 people on at once), that I ordered 980 boxes for the warehouse, and helped customers buy things.  He listened very politely the whole time, as we made our way into the house and put our things in their places, then responded with an "oh, ok".  Then he was off playing with his Legos.

My little boy is growing up so fast, he amazes me all the time!

Bush. Bush. Tree.

Big tree small tree.

Driving around the other day Alex said "Mommy, if we were bushes, I would be a little bush, and you would be a medium bush, and Daddy...
Daddy would be a TREE!"

Otto the Elephant

We have an invisible pet baby elephant named Otto.  He followed Alex home from school yesterday.  Alex told me: "His favorite food is pizza. That is plain. Plain pizza. (cheese, that is) He can suck it up through his nose.  His nose is called a trunk." Here you can see Alex holding him up to the window so he can watch the train pass.

There are 2 engines pushing it!

If this all sounds rather familiar, you're thinking of Goldfish the Cat.

Look at my handsome boy!

Sunshine and Chalk

There is nothing better than playing with chalk in the sun after a long nap that marks the end of a cold! Nothing.

Oh, poop!

While watching Despicable Me, one of the characters exclaimed "Oh, poop!". Alex immediately laughed, then looked me in the eye and informed me "poop" is NOT a Building Blocks word.

Building an obstacle course.

For tater tot who he got from the treasure box for napping well at school.

Muffins = Love

Alex woke me up this morning asking for muffins.  It goes without saying that the muffins he wants are banana chocolate chip.  So, after I finally pried myself out of bed (bless my dear hubby for letting me sleep in) and had a little caffeine, we set to work making muffins.  Stan asked when this tradition started, and it made us wonder just how many batches of this particular muffins I've made now... Alex was about 2 (ask him why Mommy makes muffins and he'll tell you "it's because she loves me very much").  And though we have gone a week here and there without a batch, there have been other weeks with multiple batches.  Stan guesses it's round about 200 batches now.  No wonder I make them without a recipe, I'm on auto pilot.

But I do make them because I love my boys very much.  (Really.  I grew tired of eating them about 100 batches ago...)

Kansas Buffalo

Alex is putting on a puppet show.  Cutie.

He sponge painted and cut out the Buffalo this week to celebrate Kansas' Sesquicentennial!

I'm not 5

So, it's a snow day here.  The snow is deep, the sun is bright.  It's a good day.

Alex and I are watching MythBusters, the one about the exploding jawbreaker candy... they've tried everything, then decide to just blow it up, like it had been tampered with by "a 5 year old evil genius".  I took the opportunity to ask Alex - are you a 5 year old evil genius?

His response?  "I'm not 5."

Hahahaha.  So funny.  I told him that was a good answer.
